The gearbox selectors and striking forks are assembled in the top cover and
are therefore removed complete.
– Remove sliding gear shaft ( Section 495 ).
– Remove layshaft ( Section 498 ).
– Remove first reduction pinion ( Section 501 ).
– Remove reverse shaft ( Section 504 ).
CHANGE SPEED LEVER ( Before R 3061 ) —
TO REMOVE
( See Figure 30}
SECTION – Remove the nuts from the studs holding the top cover to gearbox
486 casting. The cover complete with change speed lever can then be
removed. Remove change speed lever knob. Remove leather cover from
change speed gate and four countersunk headed set screws holding gate
in position. The gate can now be removed.
– Remove nuts from four studs holding oil baffle plate inside top cover and
take out baffle.
– Remove split pin from either end of the two locking member bars, after
which the bars can be tapped out and the locking members removed.
– Remove nut ‘A’ on change speed lever shaft and pull out shaft.
– Remove tension spring from bottom of change speed lever and lever
complete with reverse stop can be lifted out.
The reverse stop spring and rods are easilv removed after removing the
reverse stop fulcrum pin.
INSPECTION ( Before R3061 )
SECTION Examine fit of change speed lever shaft in bearings; these should shew very
487 little signs of wear. If it is necessary to replace the bearings, the existing ones
are readily removable. Examine welding at bottom of change speed lever
tube; if there is any sign of the welding breaking away, the tube should be
re-welded to the lever.
TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE ( Before R3061 )
SECTION To reassemble and replace change speed lever, reverse operations given for
488 removal, ( Section 485 ).
When reassembling reverse trigger rod, place a short piece of rubber tubing
over each of the rod to prevent rattle in the change speed lever tube. If
the change speed lever is slack in the gate, the sides of the gate should be
welded up and filed out again to fit lever and so prevent rattle.
