VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL


                         TO REPLACE

         SECTION         –  Reassemble oil retaining washer and ball bearing to the bearing cage.
           497           –  Place the front oil retaining washer on the rear end of the shaft and

                            press on ball bearing assembly.

                         –  Fit the Hyatt bearing distance piece to the spigot and see that it fits
                            snugly against the shoulder of splines.

                         –  Insert the shaft through the rear of the gearbox and thread on the sliding
                            gears in the correct order. Place Hyatt bearing and front end distance
                            piece on to the spigot and force shaft right home. For further assembly
                            it is only necessary to reverse the operations detailed in ( Section 495 ).

                         LAYSHAFT AND GEARS — TO REMOVE

         SECTION         –  Remove gearbox ( Section 480 or 484 ).
           498           –  Remove sliding gear shaft ( Section 495 ).

                         –  Remove speedometer drive ( Section 507 ).
                         –  Remove clutch throw out fork ( Section 313 ).
                         –  Remove the aluminium cover at front end of gearbox and layshaft cover
                            at rear end.
                         –  Remove nut on rear end of layshaft and drive out shaft from the rear.
                         –  Remove nut from front end of shaft and drag off the ball race.
                         –  Remove gear wheels which will be left in the box.

                         INSPECTION

         SECTION         –  Thoroughly clean shaft, gear wheels and ball bearings.
           499           –  Examine fit of wheels on shaft and ball bearings for smooth running and

                            radial play.


                         TO REPLACE

         SECTION         To replace layshaft, reverse operations given for removal, ( Section 498 ).
           500           Situated in the gearbox front end cover and locating against the hardened

                         steel ball in the centre of the front end of the shaft when the cover is in
                         position is a set screw and locking nut which forms the means of adjustment
                         for taking up end float in the shaft. ‘

                         CLUTCH SHAFT AND FIRST REDUCTION

                         PINION — TO REMOVE

         SECTION         –  Remove gearbox ( Section 480 or 484 )   .
            501          –  Remove gearbox front end cover and the clutch shaft can be withdrawn
                            complete with ball race.
                         –  Remove the grub screw from the locking ring, afterwards screw off
                            locking ring and remove ball race.
