TO DISMANTLE
SECTION – Remove oil pipes from pump body. Remove the bolts clamping the
459 suction pipe plate to the gear housing and top casting. The gear housing
and gears can then be removed from the top casting.
If the spindle drive housing does not come adrift from the top casting of
the pump bodv when removing the pump, they can be easily separated
by pulling one from the other—the impeller gear of the pump being dog
driven from the driving spindle.
The spiral gear can be drawn off the driving spindle after removing the
castellated nut.
– Remove key from driving spindle and this can be withdrawn from its
housing.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Thoroughly clean all components of pump.
460 – Examine spiral gear and pump gear teeth, also fit of pump gear spindles
in bearings.
These should shew very little signs of wear.
TO REPLACE
SECTION To reassemble and replace pump, reverse operation given in ( Sections 459
461 and 458 ) respectively. If an oil filter was not originally fitted over the
suction pipe of the oil pump, it is recommended that one is fitted when
replacing it. See Service Bulletin entitled ‘Oil Filter’.
OIL FILTER – TO TEST
SECTION The function of the oil filter attached to the induction side of the engine is
462 to remove from the oil as it passes to the rockers all particles of dirt. The
filter when new has a capacity to pass 12 gallons per hour, gauge reading 15
to 20 lbs. per square inch, so that a quantity of oil equal to the lubricating
system capacity passes through the filter every ten or twelve minutes.
To ensure that the filter is working correctly, frequent tests should be
made by opening the test cock provided. If the oil flows freely, the filter is
functioning. If the oil flows sluggishly, the restriction tube fitted in the filter
end of the crankcase to filter pipe on cars bearing chassis number R 1833 and
onwards and in the crankcase end on cars prior to this number may have
become choked. This pipe should be disconnected and the restriction tube
removed and blown through to clear any obstruction. Replace the pipe and
test the filter again; should the oil still flow sluggishly, the filter cartridge
is becoming clogged and should be renewed. These tests should be made
when the engine is running and the oil fairly warm.
