VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL
The average life of a filter cartridge is 8,000 to 10,000 miles.
Supply to the valve rockers is maintained when the filter is clogged, through
a bypass valve which allows the oil to pass direct. However, if the restriction
tube is choked, no oil can pass either to the filter or rockers. It is therefore
essential to examine this tube.
TO REMOVE
SECTION – Disconnect crankcase to filter pipe and filter to cylinder head pipe, from
463 filter. Remove the four nuts holding the filter cartridge straps to the
crankcase. The filter complete with straps can then be removed. Slacken
the bolt clamping each strap to the filter cartridge and remove them.
INSPECTION
SECTION The filter cartridge and by-pass valve assembly are serviced separately or
464 as an assembly. Examine by-pass valve assembly including inlet and outlet
connections. Provided these are in good condition they can be removed and
used with the new filter cartridge.
The by-pass valve assembly is readily removable after taking out the three
bolts holding it to the filter cartridge.
TO REPLACE
SECTION If the original by-pass assembly is to be used with the new filter cartridge,
465 bolt the by-pass assembly in position, using a new gasket between the two
faces. Place the straps in position on the filter cartridge and reassemble to
the crankcase, reversing operations given for removal, ( Section 463 ).
OIL PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE
SECTION An oil regulator valve of the spring and plunger type, which prevents the
466 oil pressure mounting up too high, is fitted, and is located on the induction
side lower crankcase centre ( Fig. 28 ).
The hexagon headed plug retaining the spring and plunger may be readily
withdrawn. In the unlikely event of oil pressure failure, it is advisable to
remove the hexagon headed plug and withdraw the spring and plunger, as
the spring may be broken or too weak, or, on the other hand, the plunger
may be stuck due to some foreign matter lodged against it.
This examination should be carried out before removing the engine sump
for a full investigation.
