VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL
– Remove oil filter from pump and pump complete with oil pipes
( Section 458 ). It is essential that the pipes are disconnected from the
crankcase and main bearing connections and then removed complete
with oil pump.
– Remove connecting rods and pistons ( Section 436 ).
– Remove the two oil baffles and all main bearing caps.
– With suitable hoist lift out crankshaft and flywheel.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Examine main bearing liners ( Section 449 ) .
455 – Clean crankshaft and examine journals. These should be free from scores.
If badly scored or oval, the journals should be reground and undersize
main bearing liners fitted.
TO REPLACE
SECTION Reverse operations given for removal ( Section 454 ). Care must be taken
456 to reset valve timing correctly ( Section 423 ).
LUBRICATION AND DISTRIBUTION
SECTION Oil is introduced into the engine through the oil filler situated in the centre
457 of the rocker cover. Sufficient oil is in the sump when the oil rises to the
full notch on the dipper rod and this level should be maintained. Always
wipe dipper rod before checking oil level and stop the engine with car
standing on level ground. Allow sufficient time to elapse for the oil which
is distributed over the interior of the engine to drain into the sump before
ascertaining the oil level.
Oil distribution is effected by a submerged gear type pump, the suction
pipe of which is surrounded by an oil strainer. ( This strainer was first fitted
in production on car bearing chassis No. R2189, but has since been added to
a number of earlier cars. ) The pump consists of two small gears enclosed in
a close-fitting housing and driven by a vertical shaft and spiral gears from
the centre of the camshaft. As the pump gears rotate, oil is drawn between
the teeth and the wall of the housing to the pump outlet and subsequently
forced through the various distribution pipes.
Each main bearing is supplied with oil by an independent distribution pipe; the
big end bearings of the connecting rods are also lubricated from this supply,
communication between the main and big end bearings being established
through drilled holes in the crankshaft. Oil thrown off from the big end
bearings lubricates the pistons, gudgeon pins and cylinder walls. The camshaft
has three bearings. The centre bearing is supplied with oil through a pipe direct
from the pump. Front and rear bearings are fed from the front and rear main
bearings respectively, the crankcase and bearing liners being drilled to provide
the necessary communication.
