GEARBOX
TO REMOVE ( Before R3061 )
SECTION – Remove front floorboards.
480 – Disconnect leads and remove battery.
– Remove hand brake cross shaft ( Section 207 ).
– Jack up rear of car and move the rear axle along the springs sufficiently
to bring the front end of the propeller shaft clear of the splined spider.
– Remove top of gearbox complete with change speed lever.
– Disconnect speedometer cable.
– Remove the nuts from the studs and the five bolts holding the gearbox
to the rear of the engine. The gearbox can then be lifted back until
the clutch shaft is clear of the clutch cover, and afterwards withdrawn
complete with transmission brake from beneath the car.
TO DISMANTLE ( Before R3061 )
SECTION – Remove speedometer drive ( Section 507 ) .
481 – Remove transmission brake band and drum ( Section 204 ).
– Remove gearbox selectors and striking forks ( Section 492 ).
– Remove sliding gear shaft ( Section 495 ).
– Remove layshaft ( Section 498 ) and reverse shaft ( Section 504 ).
– Remove first reduction pinion ( Section 501 ).
INSPECTION
SECTION – Thoroughly clean all parts and examine in accordance with details given
482 under the appropriate headings. Examine machined faces of gearbox
casting which should not be damaged.
TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE ( Before R3061 )
SECTION To reassemble and replace gearbox, reverse operations given in ( Sections
483 481 and 480 ) respectively.
GEARBOX ( After R 3060 ) — TO REMOVE
SECTION On cars bearing chassis number R 3061 and onwards, it is not necessary to
484 remove the hand brake cross-shaft when removing the gearbox. Otherwise
the operations are as detailed in ( Section 480 ).
TO DISMANTLE ( AFTER R 3060 )
SECTION – Remove speedometer drive.
485 – Remove transmission brake band and drum ( Section 205 ).
