                         GROUP VI

                         CLUTCH

                         ( See Figure 13 )

SECTION Description — The clutch is of the dry, single friction plate type. Driving
300 pressure is provided by a heavy spring ‘A’ located on the rear face of the

clutch cover and applied to the friction plate through three levers, ‘K’ and
                         an internal pressure plate ‘L’.
The outer ends of the levers ‘K’, operating on cam faces on the rear surface
of the pressure plate ‘L’, provide the clutch adjustment.

Release is accomplished by moving the throw-out bearing ‘F’ toward the
flywheel, thus compressing the spring ‘A’ and releasing the pressure from
the ends of the levers ‘K’. As the clutch facings wear, the engaged position
of the release sleeve ‘C’ changes, allowing increased travel toward the
transmission. Adjustment is provided to compensate for this wear, and by
turning the clutch cover clockwise, the ends of the levers ‘K’ are brought
into contact with the higher portions of the cam faces of the pressure plate
‘L’, thus decreasing the outward travel of the release sleeve ‘C’.
When the clutch spring is compressed, the position of the release sleeve is
always the same distance from the flywheel, because this position is not
affected by wear or clutch adjustment. However, the release sleeve may
not reach its correct position ‘E’ if the clutch pedal adjustment is not set
right or changed from its correct setting. This can be corrected by following
the instructions given in ( Section 302 ).

The release sleeve ‘C’ is supported in the hub of the clutch cover and does
not run on the shaft. It is prevented from turning in the cover by a key.
The throw out bearing ‘F’ is made of a special graphite composition, and
is carried in a cup ‘H’ mounted on the pedal shaft throw out yoke. When
the pedal is depressed to release the clutch, the bearing is moved forward
against the flat, smooth face of the release sleeve ‘C’.

                         TO ADJUST
                         ( See Figure 14 )

SECTION Adjust the clutch at once should it start slipping. A better plan is to inspect
301 it at regular intervals, and adjust before slipping starts. Do not change pedal
position instead of adjusting the clutch.

The clutch is accessible by removing the toe board and hand hole plate in
                         the transmission bell housing.

Measure the distance ‘N’ from the rear face of the clutch cover to the rear
face of the release sleeve, which should be 2 / 32 ”. A gauge made of wire
                                                                      13
                                 13
with a 2 / 32 ” bend at one end may be used to advantage.
