The shoe carriers are centralised in relation to the drum by a compression spring
( ‘E’, Fig. 2 ), fitted through a hole in the carrier of the rear shoe, and bearing
against the faces 0f the shoe carrier guide. When the brakes are applied, the
spring is carried outward with the carrier, but as it exerts a greater resistance
than the main pull off spring, the return travel of the carrier is limited to the
.
clearance ( 015’ ), given between the diameter of the spring and that of the
hole in the shoe carrier. The flat spring ( ‘F’, Fig. 2 ) serves to steady the whole
of the assembly when the brake shoes are in the ‘off’ position.
