VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

locking plate from the castellations on the end of the adjustment sleeves.
Slacken off the locking ring ‘K’ and screw out the pinion adjustment
sleeve. As the ball bearing ‘A’ fitted to the forward end of the bevel pinion
shaft is housed with its locating ring in the pinion adjustment sleeve, the
assembly can be removed together. The bevel pinion with its rear end
                            bearing can then be withdrawn.
                         – Remove the bearing locating ring and bearing from the pinion adjustment
sleeve. If the position of the bevel pinion adjustment sleeve is marked in
relation to its housing, before dismantling operations are commenced,
time will be saved when readjusting the bevel pinion into mesh with the
                            crown wheel after reassembling.

                         INSPECTION

SECTION Thoroughly clean and examine bearings for smooth running, axial, and
114 radial play; if either is apparent, new bearings should be fitted. Examine oil

retaining washers, and fit new ones if necessary.

                         TO REPLACE AND ADJUST

                         ( See Figure 5 )

SECTION Assemble rear bearing to bevel pinion shaft and fit both into housing. Place
115 the distance piece ‘M’ on the pinion shaft. Assemble the front bearing,

retaining washer and cork washer to pinion adjustment sleeve and screw
home the ball race locating ring, so that the bearing is pressed right home
against the shoulder in the sleeve.

Screw the assembly into the bevel pinion housing sufficiently to allow the
spider and propeller shaft balancing drum to be fitted to the bevel pinion
shaft. It is essential that the nut ‘H’ is thoroughly tightened so that the
spider is forced right home against the inner race of the bearing before the
bevel pinion is finally adjusted into mesh with the crown wheel. Screw in
the adjustment sleeve until the location marks (made before dismantling)
                                                                               .
                                                                      .
correspond. There should be a back lash of 003” to 006” between the
teeth of the pinion and those of the crown wheel when correctly adjusted.
Tighten locking ring and replace locking plates. Re-assemble propeller
shaft to axle and replace assembly, reversing operations given for removal,
( Section 112 ). Care must be taken to see that the arms of the spider at
either end of the propeller shaft are in line when assembled.

                         AXLE CASING — TO REMOVE

                         ( See Figure 5 )
         SECTION – Remove rear axle ( Section 112 ). Remove rear axle shafts ( Section 105 ) .
116 Remove the eight / ” hexagon headed set screws, and the nuts from the two
