GROUP IV
BRAKE, HAND
SECTION Description.— THIS BRAKE, WHICH ACTS ON THE TRANSMISSION, IS
200 INTENDED FOR PARKING PURPOSES ONLY, AND MUST NOT BE UTILISED
AS A SERVICE BRAKE.
( See Figure 7 ) An external contracting band ‘A’ of generous dimensions
operates on a drum mounted at the rear of the gearbox, and to ensure
sweetness of application when the handbrake lever is pulled on, a
considerable amount of elasticity is introduced into the shaft and levers.
A set screw ‘E’ carried in a bracket off the gearbox governs the amount of
clearance between the brake band and drum and should be adjusted so that
3
there is / ” clearance when the brake is fully applied.
32
Two auxiliary coil springs ‘B’ maintain the band in the off position to
prevent any possibility of rubbing.
TO ADJUST
SECTION Adjustment is made by removing the pin from the top of the vertical rod
201 ( ‘D’, Fig. 7 ), and screwing down ‘D’ one or two turns.
BRAKE BAND — TO REMOVE AND RELINE
( See Figure 7 )
SECTION – Disconnect the two auxiliary coil springs ‘B’, remove the pin from the
202 top of the vertical rod ‘D’, and the pins which connect the brake band to
the operating arm ‘C’. The brake band can then be removed.
– Reline in the ordinary way, keeping the whole of the lining in contact
with the band while riveting. Use best quality lining.
TO REPLACE
SECTION Reverse operations given for removal ( Section 202 ) .
203 TRANSMISSION BRAKE DRUM
( Before R 3061 ) — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Jack up the rear of the car so that the axle can be moved ( Section 112 ) .
204 – Disconnect each rear brake cable from the levers. Remove the four bolts
clamping the rear axle to each rear spring. The axle can then be lifted back
along the springs sufficiently to bring the front end of the propeller shaft
clear of the splined spider in which it is fitted. The propeller shaft can now
be left hanging while carrying out further operations. Remove the splined
spider and flexible coupling from the rear of the gearbox by taking off the
nuts from the three coupling bolts which point towards the rear of the car.
Remove transmission brake band ( Section 202 ). Slacken off the bolts
