REAR HUBS — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Remove road wheels.
101 – Take out the split pin from the castellated nut at the end of each axle
shaft. Remove the nut, and the hub and brake drum can be drawn off
together by applying a suitable drag.
TO DISMANTLE
SECTION The hub and brake drum are assembled together by means of the wheel
102 attaching studs, which are screwed through the hub and locked in position
by locking nuts inside the drum and the ends burred over. When dismantling,
the nuts should be slackened off a little and then tightened up again. This
will raise the burr which can now be filed off and the nuts removed without
damaging the thread.
INSPECTION
SECTION Examine fit of Key in axle shaft and hub, check fit of hub on axle shaft tapre
103 with marking.
TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE
SECTION To reassemble hub to brake drum, reverse operation for dismantling
104 ( Section 102 ). Push the hub assembly as far as possible on to the axle shaft
taper, seeing plain washer on the end of the axle shaft, screw on the nut
and thoroughly tighten up, using a strong box spanner and stout tommy
bar. Replace the open split pin. Replace road wheel.
AXLE SHAFTS — TO REMOVE

the spindle and the pinion spacer ‘E’ can be taken out. Tap the axle
shafts inwards sufficiently to allow the split retaining washers ‘F’ to be
removed from the end of each shaft. The shafts can then be withdrawn.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Examine axle shafts for true running and check the fit of the splines on
106 the shaft in those of the planet wheels. These should be a sliding push
fit, but there should be no back lash. Examine pinion spacer and spindle
for wear.
