MARLES STEERING GEAR
SECTION Description: - The Maries steering gear operates on a different principle
630 from other types. A hardened steel cam on which a spiral groove is cut, is
mounted on the shaft carrying the steering wheel. This groove engages
with a hardened steel roller mounted between ball races carried on a rocker
shaft, to which the drop arm operating the side steering tube is fitted.
As the steering is rotated, the roller is moved backward and forward in the
groove in the cam, thus imparting the required motion to the drop arm and
side steering tube.
On account of the absence of any rubbing action between faces, and owing
to the contact surfaces being constructed of hardened steel, wear is reduced
to a minimum.

( See Figure 42 )
SECTION In the event of end float developing in the steering column, a knock will be
631 heard from the column when travelling over rough roads and road shocks
will also tend to be transmitted to the steering wheel. It will be noted that
between the box casting and the column support is a thin washer ‘A’. This
washer consists of a number of thin layers, which may be separated from
each other.
End float may be taken up by removing one or more of these thin layers.
