not excessively, and then slacken back f’ to measured on the circumference
of the large diameter of the tube support. Finally tighten all bolts.
Adjustment for taking up back lash between the cam and the roller is as
detailed in ( Section 631 ).
LUBRICATION ( After R3271 )
SECTION A large size oil plug is fitted in the steering box casting and it is essential
635 that the box is kept filled with a heavy grade gear oil.
STEERING BOX — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Disconnect side steering tube from drop arm. It will be found most
636 convenient to remove the castellated nut at the bottom of the drop arm
and drive out the taper pin, thus detaching the steering joint complete
with taper pin from drop arm. Disconnect the control levers from the
bottom of the steering box.
– In cases where the horn push is fitted to the centre of the steering wheel,
disconnect the leads from the horn push and pull the leads through the
steering column.
– Disconnect the accelerator pedal from the lever mounted on the
induction manifold.
– Disconnect leads from starter switch, and remove toe board.
– Remove clutch pedal ( Section 316 ).
– Remove the nuts from the bolts clamping the steering box in its bracket
and thence to the chassis frame.
– Remove the top half of the bracket and the steering box complete can be
lifted out.
INSPECTION
SECTION Examine steering gear for back lash, and adjust if necessary ( Section 631 ).
637
TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE
SECTION After adjusting the steering gear for back lash it is essential to make an oil
638 tight joint between the face of the side cover and box. Thoroughly clean
faces and use suitable liquid jointing compound. To replace steering box,
reverse operations given for removal ( Section 636 ).
STEERING LOCK — ADJUSTMENT ( Before R 3272 )
SECTION It is essential that the steering lock is governed by the stops in the axle beam,
639 and that they come into operation before the stops in the steering box. The
stops in the box are intended for limiting the travel during assembly, but
are not sufficiently strong to carry out that duty when the whole of the
steering is connected up.
