VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

                                       TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE

SECTION Re-assemble spring leaves in the correct order, greasing the contact surfaces
606 with graphite grease. Thoroughly tighten spring clips.

On cars bearing chassis numbers R 4110 and onwards care must be taken
when adjusting the shackle bolts ( Section 601 ).

                                       ‘SMITH’ SHOCK ABSORBERS ( Before R 3061 )

SECTION The ‘Smith’ shock absorber is of the single acting friction type, and consists
607 of two arms pivoted together, the extremities of which are connected to

the chassis frame and axle. The arm connected to the chassis carries a brake
drum, and the other arm, connected to the axle carries an external brake
band which can be adjusted to any desired extent by means of a spring
loaded tensioning bolt and wing nut. When the axle rises the two arms
move towards one another, which movement acts on the tension spring
and allows the band to slide freely round the drum.

On the rebound, however, the arms separate and the brake band coils round
the drum, thus absorbing the excess energy stored up in the car spring
                                       during the compression movement.
                                       LUBRICATION ( BEFORE R3061 )

SECTION It is essential that this type of shock absorber is kept thoroughly lubricated
608 and for this purpose a grease gun nipple is provided on the side of each
                                       shock absorber drum.

If lubrication is neglected, the friction surfaces become dry and
consequently the shock absorbers will be harsh in operation and a noise
in the form of a grunt, thud, or squeak will ensue. When lubricating it is
essential that the shock absorber adjustment is slackened right off so that
the lubricant reaches all parts of the friction surfaces. Afterwards readjust
                                       the shock absorbers.

A high melting point grease will give the most satisfactory lubrication.

                                       ‘HARTFORD’ SHOCK ABSORBERS

                                       ( After R 3060 )

SECTION On cars bearing chassis number R 3061 and onwards Hartford Shock
609 Absorbers are fitted to front and rear springs.

The Multiplex type on the front and Duplex on the rear.

These shock absorbers are of the double-acting type, the principles of which
                                       are generally understood.

                                                                                                      Page 137.
