FIGURE 44. STEERING BOX ( AFTER R 3271 )
Adjustment of steering lock should be carried out in the following
manner:— Slacken off the stops ( ‘G’ and ‘H’ Fig. 43 ) in the steering
box. Jack up the front axle, and adjust the stop in the nearside end of the
axle beam until the nearest point of the offside tyre to the road spring is
6” away from the side of the spring when the steering is turned on to full
right lock. With the steering in this position adjust the stop ( ‘G’, Fig. 43 )
in the top of the steering box casting until it is felt to be just touching the
rocker bracket, then slacken stop one complete turn, and tighten locking
nut. Adjust the stop in the offside end of the axle beam until the nearest
7
point of the nearside front tyre to the road spring is 5 / 8 ” from the side
of the spring, when the steering is in the full left lock position. With the
steering in this position adjust the stop ( ‘H’, Fig. 43 ) in the bottom of the
steering box casting until it is felt to be just touching the rocker bracket,
and then slacken stop one complete turn. Tighten locking nut.
NOTE: — If the stops in the steering box casting are set so that they
operate at the same time or before the stops in the axle beam, the box
casting may be cracked due to excessive load being taken by these stops,
when the steering is turned on to full lock. There is also great danger of
cracking the end of the steering cam track.
STEERING LOCK ( After R 3271 ) — ADJUSTMENT
SECTION On cars bearing chassis number R 3272 and onwards the stops in the steering
640 box are integral with the casting, and therefore not adjustable. The axle
stops should be adjusted as detailed in ( Section 639 ).
