STEERING BOX ( Before R 3061 ) — TREATMENT
( See Figure 45 )
SECTION As a Service treatment for overcoming steering knock and mitigating road
641 shocks transmitted to the steering wheel on cars bearing chassis number
.
prior to R 3061, a number of laminations in the form of 010” steel washers
‘E’ are fitted between the bottom face of the steering column support and
the top face of the inner bush flange.
This is carried out in conjunction with raising the oil level in the box, an oil
film existing between the laminations enabling them to have a damping
effect on the road shocks transmitted through the steering cam to the
thrust face of the inner bush.
The high oil level is obtained by drilling a hole ‘C’ through the steering box
column support, fitting a Tecalemit lubricator to the oil filler plug ‘G’ and
drilling a hole ‘D’ in the outer column to govern the maximum level.
These boxes should be filled with oil as detailed in ( Section 632 ).
The steering boxes on all cars bearing chassis number prior to R 3061 which
have a Tecalemit lubricator fitted to the oil filler plug are also fitted with
the laminations ‘E’, but the steering boxes on cars bearing chassis numbers
R 3061 to R 3271 although equipped with the high oil level and therefore a
lubricator ‘H’, have no laminations fitted as this was not necessary due to
alterations in design of the front axle ( Section 68 ).
