VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL
GROUP XV
SPRING SUSPENSION
SPRING SHACKLES ( Before R 4110 ) — TO ADJUST
SECTION On cars bearing chassis numbers prior to R4110 no adjustment is provided
600 for taking up side play in the spring shackles. However, side play in the tear
spring, rear shackles, and in the front spring, front shackles can be taken
up by removing the inside link of each pair of shackles and counter boring
the holes, so that the shoulder on the shackle bolts fits into the link and so
reduces the clearance between the face of the links and the shackle bearings.
It is, of course, essential that the links are not counter bored too deeply or
the faces will bind on the spring bearings and prevent movement of the
shackles. The total side play in the shackles should be approximately -008’.
SPRING SHACKLES ( After R 4109 ) — TO ADJUST
SECTION To take up side play in the rear spring, rear shackles, and the front spring
601 front shackles, remove split pins from castellated nuts on the shackle bolts
and tighten up the nuts until there is no side play, then slacken the nuts one
castellation and replace split pin.
FRONT SPRINGS — TO REMOVE
SECTION With suitable hoist raise front of chassis frame sufficiently to take the weight
602 off the front axle. Remove the four bolts holding the axle to each front spring.
Remove the shackle links and bolts, and the springs can be removed.
REAR SPRINGS—TO REMOVE
SECTION With suitable hoist raise rear of chassis frame sufficiently to take the load
603 off the rear springs.
– Remove the four bolts holding the rear axle to each spring.
– Remove the spring shackle bolts, and the springs can be removed.
TO DISMANTLE
SECTION – Remove spring gaiters.
604 – Remove bolts and distance pieces in the alignment clips.
– Remove location bolt in centre of spring.
INSPECTION
SECTION Examine spring leaves; they should be unbroken, free from cracks, and the
605 surfaces which make contact with other leaves must be smooth. If rusty they
should be thoroughly cleaned. Examine bronze bushings in the spring eyes.
The bushings should be a tight driving fit in the eyes, and have no more
.
than 005” clearance on the shackle bolts.
