VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

                                       TO REPLACE ( Before R 3061 )
SECTION To replace connecting rod bearing liners reverse operations for removal
                         445 ( Section 443 )

The bearings should be a snug fit on the journals when bolted up, i.e., the
bearings should be free to turn on the journals but there should be no clearance.

                                                                                                  .
                                                                                                          .
End float of the bearings on the crank journals should be from 006” to 010”.
                                       CONNECTING ROD BIG END BEARINGS
                                       ( After R 3060 )
SECTION On cars bearing chassis number R 3061 and onwards, the white metal lining of
446 the big end is integral with the rod and cap. To take up wear on the bearings,

remove connecting rods and pistons ( Section 436 ) and file equal amounts
of metal from the faces of the rods and caps until the bearings are a snug
fit on the respective crank journals when the bolts are thoroughly tight.
Thoroughly clean crank journals, connecting rods and pistons and reassemble.
                                       MAIN BEARINGS

SECTION Description — The main bearings are of gun metal, white metal lined. The
447 bottom half of the bearings are located by means of hollow dowels through

which oil passes to the bearings.

The two centre bearings are flanged on one side and take the end thrust of
                                       the crankshaft.

                                       TO REMOVE
SECTION Unless the engine has been removed from the chassis for any other purpose,
448 the main bearings can be removed for inspection with the engine in position.

                                       – Remove engine undershield and sump, also oil pump ( Section 458 ).
                                       – Remove the caps from numbers one and two main bearings. The liners
can then be removed from the bearing caps and the top half of the liners
from the crankcase by pushing them gently round the crank journal.

                                       – Clean and inspect liners and crank journal. Replace liners and bolt up
bearing caps. Remove the remaining bearings in pairs, clean, inspect and
replace each pair before removing a further pair of bearings.

                       SECTION INSPECTION
                         449
The white metal lining of the bearing should be whole and free from
scores. Examine crank journals; if these are badly scored the shaft should
                                       be removed and reground.

The main bearings, when bolted up, should be a snug fit on the crank journals, i.e.,
the crankshaft should be free to turn by hand, but there should be no clearance.
Only standard size and 020’ undersize main bearing liners are serviced.

                                       – Examine cork wedge fitted in either side of rear main bearing cap.

                                                                                                      Page 95.
