leverage, allowing the dynamo to move back toward its original position
the minimum amount necessary to give the desired result of lessened noise.

Then holding the dynamo drive housing in this position by means of the
lever, tighten the two nuts ‘A’. The nut on the bottom retaining bolt is
somewhat inaccessible, but the dynamo drive housing can be turned quite
easily after the two upper nuts have been slackened. Do not exert any
pressure on the dynamo body itself.

It should be understood that an over-tensioned timing chain will howl when
the engine is revved up, and that a slack chain clatters when the engine is
                                       running slowly.

NOTE:— If the timing chain is allowed to run slack there is a possibility of it
jumping the teeth of the timing wheels, consequently deranging the engine
                                       timing.

                                       TIMING CHAIN — TO REMOVE
                       SECTION – Remove dynamo ( Section 364 ).
                          421
                                       – Remove front engine cover ( Section 417 ). The dynamo-drive can then
be tipped over sufficiently to allow the chain to be removed.

The chain is of the endless type and can be removed only by tipping over
                                       the dynamo drive.

                                       INSPECTION

SECTION Clean off chain and chain sprockets.
422 The chain should be in good condition and the sprockets should shew very

                                       little wear.

If excessive wear is evident on either, it is recommended that the sprockets
and chain be replaced if quiet running is to result.

                                       TO REPLACE

SECTION The crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are marked by means of chisel cuts
423 to ensure correct re-timing of the engine.

                                       – Turn the crankshaft and camshaft until the chisel cuts on the sprockets
are adjacent and corresponding with a line drawn through the centres
of the two sprockets. With the shafts in this position, carefully lay the
chain over the sprockets and the dynamo drive sprocket. Lever over
the dynamo drive housing to take up any slack in the chain. See that
the crankshaft and camshaft are still in the correct position and replace
front engine cover and dynamo ( Section 417 ).

                                       – Finally, readjust timing chain as detailed in ( Section 420 ).

                                                                                                       Page 87.
