INSPECTION
SECTION – Thoroughly clean sprockets and dynamo drive bearings. The sprockets
425 should shew very little signs of wear.
– Examine bearings, and if excessive wear is evident, they should be renewed.
TO REPLACE
SECTION – Reassemble dynamo drive, reversing operations given for dismantling in
426 ( Section 424 ). Before driving on either of the timing chain sprockets
smear the shafts with grease to reduce friction. Fit the sprocket on the
end of the crankshaft so that the keyway is in alignment with the key in
the shaft, and drive on sprocket by means of a tubular drift.
– Replace starting dog in a similar manner.
– Push camshaft sprocket on to the shaft as far as possible by hand, taking
care that the keyway corresponds with the key in the shaft. Screw on the
sprocket retaining nut and force the sprocket right home by tightening
the nut. Thoroughly tighten nut. Replace timing chain ( Section 423 )
and front engine cover ( Section 419 ).
CAMSHAFT — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Remove valve rockers and push rods ( Section 411 ) .
427 – Remove tappet blocks ( Section 414 ).
– Remove front engine cover ( Section 417 ).
– Remove timing chain ( Section 421 ).
– Disconnect leads from sparking plugs, high tension lead from coil, and
on cars with the resistance fitted to the distributor, disconnect lead from
resistance.
– Disconnect advance and retard control from distributor arm. Remove
two nuts holding distributor in position, and the distributor can be
withdrawn after the control bracket has been removed.
– Turn the camshaft until the two nuts retaining the front camshaft
bearing are visible through the holes provided in the sprocket.
The nuts can then be removed by means of a box spanner, after which the
camshaft can be withdrawn complete with sprocket and front bearing.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Thoroughly clean shaft.
428 – The end float of the camshaft is governed by the front bearing and
.
should not exceed 004”. If there is excessive end float, remove camshaft
sprocket and fit special distance washers between the back face of the
sprocket and the front face of the bearing, to take up the excessive
.
clearance. Examine bearing clearances; these should not exceed 004”. In
the event of excessive clearance being evident, new bearings should be
fitted. The camshaft journals and cams should be free from scores.
