FRONT ENGINE COVER — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Remove bonnet, head lamps and wing tie bar complete, radiator and
417 engine undershield.
– Remove starting handle shaft bracket. Disconnect all controls from
bottom of steering box and front exhaust pipe from elbow.
– Disconnect oil gauge pipe from connection at dashboard, and petrol
pipes from Autovac and dashboard filter.
– On cars bearing chassis number R 4237 and onwards disconnect main
petrol supply pipe from petrol pump. Remove floorboards. Disconnect
handbrake operating arm from adjusting rod. Disconnect leads from
dynamo and starter. Remove battery. Remove the two bolts holding the

front engine bearing to the frame cross member and the / 8 ”bolt from
each rear engine bearing bracket. The front of the engine can now be
raised sufficiently to clear the frame cross member. Remove the four
bolts holding the fan pulley flanges to the body on camshaft. The flanges
and the fan belt can now be removed.
– Remove nut from end of camshaft and drag off fan pulley body.
– Remove all nuts holding front engine cover in position. This will then be
free for removal.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Clean cover with paraffin. Examine machined faces.

TO REPLACE
SECTION To replace, reverse operations given for removal ( Section 417 ) using liquid
419 jointing compound between the face of the cover and the front face of the
crankcase.
TIMING CHAIN — TO ADJUST
( See Figure 26 )
SECTION Adjustment is provided to take up slackness in the timing chain due to
420 stretching, and after approximately the first 3,000 miles of car travel the
chain should be adjusted as detailed below. The initial stretch of the chain is
greatest, and therefore, subsequent adjustment is necessary at less frequent
periods ( approximately 5,000 miles ).
To take up slackness in the timing chain, start the engine and set the hand
throttle four or five notches open, so that the engine is running at about
1,000 r.p.m. Slacken the two upper nuts ‘A’ holding the dynamo drive
housing to the timing gear case, insert a short lever between the slotted
flange and the crankcase and turn the whole dynamo in an anti-clockwise
direction ( looking at it from the rear ) about the axis of the bottom retaining
bolt, until a harsh noise is emitted from the chain, then gently ease off the
