cars bearing chassis number R3061, and 006” to 008” ( 01524 mm to 0 2032

running slowly insert a 018” or 006” ( 01524 mm ) feeler gauge (as necessary
according to chassis number) between the end of the valve stem and the ball ended
adjustor. Slacken off the adjustment locking nut and screw down the adjustor by
means of a screw driver or the key provided in the car kit until it is just nipping the
gauge, then slowly slacken it back until the gauge can just be withdrawn.
– Tighten locking nut.
.

.
As a check on the setting try to insert a 020” or 008” ( 0 508 mm or
.
0 2032 mm ) feeler gauge ( according to chassis number ); if it is possible
the clearance is too great and the previous operation must be repeated.
NOTE:— It will be found that the feeler gauge can be inserted more easily
if the push rod end of the rocker is slightly depressed by hand.
VALVE ROCKER GEAR —
TO REMOVE AND DISMANTLE
SECTION – Remove rocker cover.
411 – Remove nuts from studs holding each rocker spindle bracket in position.
– Remove oil feed pipe from cylinder head to rocker gear, after which the
rocker gear is free to be removed.
– The rockers are mounted on two spindles ( 6 on each ), joined together by
means of a shouldered bushing, which is a push fit in the end of each spindle.
– Separate the two spindles and remove the central connection.
– Remove the location set screws in the rocker spindle brackets and the spring
retaining rings on the ends of the rocker spindles. The rockers, location
springs and brackets can now be removed from the spindles. Number the
rockers 1 to 12 s6 that they are replaced in their original positions.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Thoroughly clean rocker gear.
412 – Examine spindles for wear.
– Examine fit of rockers on spindles. If excessive play in the bearings is
evident, replace the worn parts.
– Examine the valve clearance adjustment screws. Remove any burrs from the
threads which may have been caused when making adjustments. Examine
V steel ball at either end of each push rod and if pitted, fit new ones.
