TO REPLACE
SECTION To reassemble and replace rocker gear, reverse operations given in
413 ( Section 411 ). Reference should be made to the Service Bulletin entitled
‘Oiling up of sparking plugs’. After replacing rocker gear roughly set the
valve clearances in the ordinary manner, turning the engine by means of the
starting handle to bring each valve in position. Finally, reset the clearances
when the engine is warmed up and running slowly ( Section 410 ).
TAPPET BLOCKS — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Remove rocker cover and tappet doors. Remove rocker gear and push
414 rods. Number push rods 1 to 12 as they are removed. Care must be taken
in removing the push rods so that the steel balls do not fall into the sump.
– Remove the bolts holding each block of six tappets in position. These can
then be removed.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Examine fit of tappets in block. Each tappet should be a sliding push
415 fit in its guide. If excessive wear is evident, replace the worn parts. The

original diameter of the tappet stem is 6245 / 6240.
TO REPLACE
SECTION Reverse operations given for removal ( Section 414 ). The push rods must be
416 replaced in their original positions. Finally, reset valve clearances ( Section 410 ).
