SECTION Low Compression
21 ( a ) Faulty valve seatings.
( b ) Valves sticking.
( c ) Broken valve springs.
( d ) Badly fitting piston rings.
( e ) Faulty cylinder head gasket.
SECTION Engine fires irregularly
22 ( a ) Faulty or dirty sparking plugs.
( b ) Faulty insulation on high tension leads to sparking plugs.
( c ) Carburation.
( d ) Induction manifold joints leaking.
( e ) Gap at distributor contact points too small.
( f ) Broken or fractured windscreen wiper pipe.
( g ) Faulty distributor.
( h ) Faulty coil.
SECTION Engine difficult to start
23 ( a ) Ignition not switched on.
( b ) Insufficient supply of petrol.
( c ) Carburettor choke shutter not completely closed.
( d ) Carburettor jets choked.
( e ) Faulty or dirty sparking plugs.
( f ) Faulty high tension leads.
( g ) Dirty or greasy distributor contact breaker points.
( h ) Battery not charged sufficiently to turn starter fast enough.
( i ) Battery not charged sufficiently to operate starter and ignition simultaneously.
( j ) Poor battery earth return connection.
( k ) Ignition coil low tension leads not making good contact.
SECTION Engine ‘Pinks’ early
24 ( a ) Engine requires de-carbonising.
( b ) Ignition too far advanced.
( c ) Automatic- ignition control springs weak or broken.
( d ) Automatic ignition control weights stuck.

26 ( a ) Petrol pipes or filters partly choked.
