FIGURE 36. PETROL PUMP AND FILTER

FAILURE TO SUPPLY PETROL TO CARBURETTOR
                         ( After R 4236 ).

SECTION It is most unlikely that this will be caused by the petrol pump itself, and
571 before suspecting it, the filters and petrol pipe line should be examined.

If the filters are quite clear the pipe line should be blown out to remove any
obstruction. If, after this treatment, the petrol supply still fails, the petrol
pump complete should be removed and replaced by another.

                         PETROL FILTERS ( After R 4236 )

SECTION A cylindrical wick filter attached to the petrol tank drain plug, surrounds
572 the inlet end of the main petrol supply pipe. It is advisable to remove this
filter two or three times a year for cleaning. Before replacing the filter it
should be thoroughly dried. Care should be taken in withdrawing the filter
not to tilt it, otherwise the main petrol supply pipe will be damaged.

An efficient and visible type of filter is incorporated with the petrol pump
( Fig. 36 ). This filter consists of a glass bowl and two gauze screens. All
petrol on its way from the tank to the carburettor passes into the glass
bowl and through the gauze screens. Any water passing the tank filter is
trapped in the glass bowl and all foreign matter is caught by the gauze
screens. All solid matter thus extracted comes to rest at the bottom of the
glass bowl and is visible upon inspection. When the bottom of the bowl
becomes covered with sediment, etc., it is advisable to remove and clean.
