To remove slacken the locking ring, when the glass bowl and one screen will
come away. The second gauze screen can be removed after taking out the
cork washer in the top casing.
When replacing the glass bowl, ensure that the cork washer is correctly
seated and not broken. Finally tighten the locking ring sufficiently to hold
the bowl firmly in position.
CARBURETTOR
FLOAT MECHANISM
SECTION The only trouble likely to occur to the carburettor will be due to grit under
573 the needle valve, when the carburettor will constantly flood. In which
case disconnect the petrol pipe from the union below the float chamber
( Fig. 37 ), remove the union and wash out the needle valve seating with
petrol.
Should it be necessary to remove the needle valve, remove the float
chamber cover, and float fulcrum screw ( ‘A’, Fig. 38 ). The needle valve
and float can then be taken out. Care should be taken to replace the float
the same way up, also to ensure that float lever is in the collar of the needle
valve before replacing seating.
MAIN JET
SECTION The main jet ( ‘J’, Fig. 37 ) is situated below the slow running jet and is
574 readily removable.
On no account should the hole in the jet be tampered with, or cleaned out
with any form of metal wire. Should the jet become choked it should be
cleared by blowing through the hole from the top of the jet, viz., in the
reverse direction to the petrol flow.
POWER JET
( See Figure 38 ) .
SECTION The power jet is situated in the bottom of the carburettor adjacent to the
575 main jet, and is brought into operation by means of a valve which, in turn,
is operated by a cam fitted on the end of the throttle spindle.
On cars where the operating position of the cam is adjustable it should
be set so that it begins to open the power jet valve when the throttle is
approximately half open.
The power jet should be cleaned in the same manner as the main jet.
