TO RE-ASSEMBLE
SECTION Reverse operations given for dismantling ( Section 561 ). If the cork washers
563 between the flanges and the top of the tank have become damaged, these
must be replaced by new ones.
FAILURE TO SUPPLY PETROL TO CARBURETTOR
( Before R 4237 )
SECTION This may be due to other causes than the Autovac system. After flooding
564 the carburettor, if petrol runs out of the carburettor float chamber, the
Autovac is performing its work of feeding petrol to the carburettor. The
pipes leading from the main petrol tank and induction pipe to the Autovac
should be carefully examined, as a leak in either pipe will interfere with the
correct working of the system.
FILLING UP AUTOVAC IN STARTING ( Before R4237 )
SECTION To fill the Autovac should it ever become entirely empty, remove the
565 carburettor float chamber cover and fill the float chamber with petrol in
order to get the engine running. This will create sufficient vacuum in the tank
to fill it. If the Autovac has been allowed to stand empty for a considerable
time and does not fill readily, it may be caused by dirt or sediment being
under the drop valve — or one of the top valves may be dry. Removing the
air vent cap and suction connection on the top of the Autovac, and squirting
a little petrol into the tank will wash any dirt from the drop valve and wet
the top valves, and cause the Autovac to work immediately.
The drop valve sometimes gets covered with carbon deposit, which prevents
it from being sucked tight to its seating, in which case the inner tank should
be removed and the drop valve cleaned ( Section 561 ). Every six months
flush the Autovac through as described above; at the same time open drain
tap at bottom of tank, to drain off any sediment or water. Also check over
pipe connections to see that they are absolutely tight.
PETROL FILTERS ( Before R 4237 ) — TO CLEAN
SECTION A cylindrical wick filter is attached to the petrol tank drain plug and surrounds
566 the end of the main petrol supply pipe. Care must therefore be taken when
removing this filter to draw it straight down to avoid damaging the petrol
pipe. The object of this filter is to absorb any moisture in the petrol. After
cleaning, the filter should be thoroughly dried before replacing.
A second filter is mounted on the dashboard by the side of the Autovac and
for cleaning purposes it is necessary to remove the pipe leading from the
top of the filter to the Autovac and screw off the cap to which the filter
gauze is attached. Periodic opening of the tap at the bottom of the filter
body will drain off any sediment which has collected at the bottom.
Petrol pipes can be cleaned by the usual method of blowing through.
