502 evident, replace bearing.
– Examine Hyatt bearing on mainshaft spigot. This will probably remain
inside the first reduction pinion when removed.
If for any reason it is necessary to replace the first reduction pinion, the
layshaft constant mesh wheel must also be replaced.
TO REPLACE
SECTION – Fit Hyatt bearing and front end distance pieces to mainshaft spigot.
503 Assemble ball race, thoroughly tighten locking ring and screw grub
screw right home in ring.
To replace the assembly, reverse operations given for removal ( Section 501 ).
REVERSE PINION ASSEMBLY — TO REMOVE
( See Figure 31 )
SECTION – Remove gearbox ( Section 480 or 484 ). On cars bearing chassis number
504 prior to R 3061 remove selectors ( Section 492 ).
– Remove clutch throw-out fork ( Section 313 ).
– Remove transmission brake band and drum ( Section 204 or 205 ).
– Remove the set screw from boss on gearbox casting at rear end of reverse
pinion shaft, which locates the position of the shaft. The shaft can then
be driven out from the front end of the box, after which the reverse
pinion is free for removal.
INSPECTION
SECTION – Examine fit of reverse pinion on shaft; if there is excessive slack in
505 bearing, the Section phosphor bronze bush should be pressed out and
replaced. After fitting new 505 bush, drill four oil holes to correspond
with those in pinion.
– Remove all burrs inside bush made by drilling.
TO REPLACE
