occasionally to see that they have sufficient tension to keep the brushes
firmly pressed against the commutator.
If any of the brushes become so badly worn that it is necessary to replace
them, release the eyelet on the brush lead, then, holding the brush spring
back, withdraw the brush from its holder. The new brush can then be fitted
by reversing the foregoing operations.
COMMUTATOR
SECTION The commutator should be kept clean and free from brush dust. If the
363 commutator has been neglected and become blackened causing sparking
to occur at the brushes, the dynamo should be removed and dismantled
( Sections 364 and 365 ) so that the commutator can be thoroughly
cleaned. Mount the armature in a lathe and clean the commutator with fine
glass paper, after which the armature should be mounted on V blocks and
the grooves between segments of the commutator cleaned by means of a
thin saw blade to remove any deposits of copper or carbon, and undercut
the mica if necessary.
DYNAMO — TO REMOVE
SECTION – Remove the nuts from the three bolts holding the dynamo to the
364 rear face of the engine timing gear housing. The dynamo can then be
removed.
TO DISMANTLE
SECTION
365 – Remove dynamo from engine ( Section 364 ) .
– Remove driving coupling and key from end of armature spindle.
– Remove the eight screws fixing the rear end bracket to the yoke.
Withdraw the three brushes from their holders.
– Remove thrust screw in the commutator end of the spindle. Then by
tapping the commutator end of the armature spindle, the armature
complete with rear end bracket can be withdrawn from the yoke.
– Unscrew oil retaining washer from driving end of the armature spindle,
and remove the three screws holding the driving end bearing plate in
position and remove the plate. Tap the driving end of the armature
spindle when it will come away from the bracket.
– Remove the bearings at either end of the spindle from their housings.
– Release the eyelet on the lead from the field coils on the positive brush
box. Remove the shunt terminal and release the eyelet on the lead
from the field coils. Remove the six screws fixing the commutator end
bracket to the yoke and the bracket can be removed. The field coils can
be withdrawn from the yoke after removing the pole pieces.
