VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

                         INSPECTION

SECTION – Examine bearings. These should rotate smoothly and quietly. If rough or
366 radially slack they should be renewed. The bearings should be packed with
good quality high melting point grease before re-assembling. Examine
commutator. If pitted or blackened it should be cleaned ( Section 363 ).

If the commutator is out of truth it should be skimmed up on a lathe, and
the mica between the segments should be undercut.

                         TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE

SECTION Reverse the operations detailed in ( Sections 365 and 364 ) respectively.
            367
                         STARTING MOTOR

SECTION Description – The sole purpose of the starting motor is to crank the
368 engine. It is a series motor and is mounted on the nearside front face of

the flywheel housing. When in operation, the starting motor drives the
flywheel through a pinion which meshes directly with teeth cut on the
periphery of the flywheel. A spring is fitted behind the Bendix spindle of
the motor and absorbs the shock of the engagement with the teeth on
the flywheel when the starter switch is depressed. Immediately the engine
fires, the starter pinion is automatically thrown out of mesh.
TO TEST ( IN POSITION )

SECTION – Switch off the ignition, depress the starter switch and note the speed at
369 which the engine is turned over.

If the motor is sluggish or fails to move the engine, try cranking the engine
by means of the starting handle. If the engine can be turned over by hand the
trouble lies in the starter circuit. See that all terminals in starter circuit are tight.

                         – Examine starting motor brushes and commutator. Inspect battery
                            ( Section 351 ) .

                         TO REMOVE

SECTION – Disconnect the cable from the positive terminal of the battery.
370 – Disconnect cable from starting motor.
                         – Remove the three nuts from the studs holding the motor to the flywheel
housing. Then by pulling the motor towards the front of the car it can be
                            removed.

                         TO DISMANTLE

         SECTION – Remove starting motor from engine ( Section 370 ) .
371 – Slacken clamping screw and remove brush cover.

                         – Withdraw the brushes from the brush box. Remove the eight screws
fixing the driving end bracket to the yoke.
