VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

cap on the front brakes and the hand wheel on the rear brakes until the
brake shoes are just rubbing the drums; then slacken off the adjustment
until they are just clear. On no account must the brake cables be adjusted to
compensate for wear on the brake shoe liners.

If the Works’ setting of the brake cables has been disturbed so that the
braking efficiency is impaired, proceed as follows:- Adjustment is provided
at the compensating lever end of each brake cable. See that the front end of
each rear brake cable tube is held firmly in the correct position by the clamp
( Section 262 ). See Fig. 9. Slacken off the cable adjustment locking nuts
‘C’ and unscrew the adjustors ‘D’; hold each compensating lever ‘A’ against
its stop ‘H’, and see that the top of each rear cable jaw ‘F’, when horizontal
as shewn, is level with the top of the frame. If not, slacken the bolts ‘G’,
clamping the cross shaft bearing brackets to the cross member and turn
the shaft round the member until the cable jaws are in the correct position.
Adjust the front cables so that they hold the compensating levers ‘A’ lightly
against the stops ‘H’. Adjust the rear cables until all the slackness is taken
up, but not sufficiently to pull the compensating levers away from the
stops. Tighten the adjustment locking nuts and finally readjust the brakes,
as detailed previously. When correctly adjusted, the braking is in the ratio
                                                         .
of approximately 1 3 on the front to 1 on the rear.
                                       FRONT BRAKES

SECTION Description – The front brakes are equipped with locomotive type of floating
264 shoes faced with a non-burning fabric and mounted on carriers. Each shoe

is steadied on its carrier by a strong compression .spring ( ‘C’, Fig. 2 ) fitted
through a hole in the carrier and operating against the inside faces of the
                                       shoe.
