VAUXHALL 20-60 SHOP MANUAL

                         INSPECTION

SECTION – Examine cables and tubes. If the cables are frayed, they should be
258 renewed, and the tubes must be free from kinks.

                         – Pack tubes with grease before replacing.

                         TO REPLACE

SECTION Reverse operations given in ( Section 257 ), taking care to adjust brake
            259 cables as detailed in ( Section 263 ).

REAR BRAKE CABLES — TO REMOVE

SECTION – Disconnect the cable adjustors from the jaws attached to the compensating
260 levers and disconnect the rear end of the cables from the brake operating
                            arms.

The front end of the cable tubes are clamped in a bracket attached to the top
of the frame on either side of the chassis. Slacken the clamping bolt and turn
the top plate of the bracket sideways. Remove the clips which hold the rear end
of the tubes against the brackets attached to the frame above each rear spring
front shackle. The cables, complete with tubes, can then be removed.

                         INSPECTION

SECTION – Examine cables, and if frayed, they should be renewed. The cable must
261 be nipped tightly between the two halves of the rear end jaw, and the

tubes must be free from kinks.

                         – Pack tubes with grease before replacing.

                         TO REPLACE

SECTION Reverse the operations given for removal, ( Section 260 ). The front end
262 of the cable tubes are belled out and it is essential that the clamping plate
is not tightened down on the belled portion, as in that position the tube
cannot be held securely and is likely to be pulled forward on the first hard
application of the brakes, with subsequent loss of braking efficiency. Always
tighten the clamp on the parallel part of the tube and just behind the belled
portion. Adjust the cables in the same manner as given in ( Section 263 ).
                         Finally, readjust brakes. ( Section 263 )

                         FOUR WHEEL BRAKE ADJUSTMENT

SECTION The front brake adjusting cap mounted above each swivel axle pivot pin is
263 turned in a clockwise direction to compensate for wear on the brake shoe liners,

while the hand wheel mounted on the differential side of each rear brake drum
is turned in the direction in which the feet at the end of the spokes point.

When adjusting the four wheel brakes, it is essential that the following
directions are carried out. Jack up each wheel in turn and rotate the adjusting
