AM GOING TO TRY to explain to you an old man’s views of what can be
understood about “That Mysterious Veil”. This I shall do without stepping into the
realms of Religious dogmas, Spiritualism or other beliefs or traditions. The Craft is
but a foundation for any good religious belief but is not a substitute for any. Here, I am
guided only by the Principles and Tenets explained to us in Regular, Universal, Craft
Masonry. We have been asked to contemplate our inevitable destiny. This, I hope, will
be a contribution to that end. It is not an easy subject to explain because Masonry uses
Symbolism to develop the understanding of Abstract Thought just as Children use picture
books to aid their physical understanding.
It is that Mysterious Veil which the eye of human reason alone cannot penetrate unless
assisted by that true light from the Most HIGH, which is The Reality. We are taught that
the advantages of education are required to achieve a greater understanding and, through
a knowledge of Nature and Science, this contemplation can be very beneficial and bring
us to the throne of GOD himself, whom we ought most humbly to adore. That is what
the three degrees tell us.
As a Regular Free Mason, we have already believed in the Great Architect of the
Universe and are not stupid Atheists. They believe that this Universe of Time and Space is
real and not created and that at death our real Ego decomposes with our bodies and that
is the end of it. In fact, the more that is discovered about our Physical Universe, the more
our simple Masonic belief in the Great Architect is strengthened and our belief that our
Real “I AM” will continue when Time with us shall be no more. For example :— When
Galileo discovered that the World was round and that there were myriads of others like it,
our beliefs were not affected. When Darwin produced his theory of Evolution it made no
difference to our order. The discovery of wireless telegraphy, forced certain changes upon
some faiths but did not affect our Principles and Tenets. We now understand Einstein’s
Theory of Relativity which demonstrates that motion is the key to further understanding.
We also know that a small piece of Matter is completely destroyed by the power of an
atomic bomb. Where does it go to? We are now told that explosions, Black Holes and
other curiosities did occur all over the Universe but what we now see in the sky is what
was there, perhaps thousands or even millions of years ago. We talk of expanding space, but
