TO REPLACE
SECTION Reverse operations given for removal ( Section 529 ).
531 Whenever new contact points are fitted, it is essential that they are finally
adjusted and synchronised ( Sections 527 and 528 respectively ).
DISTRIBUTOR SEMI-AUTOMATIC
ADVANCE MECHANISM
SECTION Fig. 33 shews the distributor with the contact point plate removed. The
532 automatic advance mechanism consists of two weights ‘A’ hinged at points
‘B’ and held in position by springs ‘C’.
As the engine speed increases, centrifugal force throws both weights
outward, and because the weights are attached to the cam spindle, this
is advanced gradually as the distance between the weights increases.
Therefore, in any advance position of the manual control, a further amount
of advance is added by the automatic mechanism, and this is proportionate
to the engine speed.
It will be readily understood that if the weights ‘A’ become stuck in the
outward position, engine pinking will be excessive at low speeds, especially
under load.
INSPECTION
SECTION To examine the automatic advance mechanism remove the screws attaching
533 the distributor cap clips, and the condenser lead screw on the distributor
body. The contact point retaining plate can then be removed complete and
the automatic advance mechanism will be exposed.
– Wash off with petrol, see that the weights are free, and the springs
unbroken.
– Smear oil round the moving parts before re-assembling.
CONDENSER—TO TEST
SECTION A faulty condenser will cause rapid burning of the contact points and a
534 greyish deposit will be seen round the points. To test the condenser it must
be removed from the distributor.
– Remove the set screw holding the condenser lead to the side of the
distributor body. Remove the two screws holding the condenser in
position at the base of the body, and the condenser can be removed.
– Connect the condenser in series with a voltmeter reading 250 volts.
– Connect in power circuit of approximately 200 volts, and the voltmeter
should continue to read zero.
