Amo Amass A-Muse - Lodge of the Nine Muses 63
Brother Walter Webb, who had been our Master during our centenary year, was the
Secretary and Brother Luxmore Marshall the M. of C.
We followed them, P.B.O. as Secretary and I as D. of C. How courtly, polite and
genuine they were. Walter Webb was a little dapper man with a high pitched voice and
a high stiff collar. He certainly ruled the Lodge but put it in such a way that one felt
that you were granting him a favour. At my initiation, Luxmore Marshall was W.M. for
the second time but allowed my Father to take the Chair. He was erect and tall with
white hair, a great ritualist with a beautiful speaking voice.
At the banquet afterwards, I sat between the two of them. On my first attempt at
‘Fire’, Brother Webb explained to me the peculiar way in which the Nine Muses did
it. He explained that before each set of claps there was a cut. I remember him saying
— “Now you know what that means as you have just been Initiated.” I have explained
and proved this method in another paper and I hope that you will keep it going.
Perhaps our ritual was not so good as it is today but I remember being told that
it was more important to impress the candidate with what one was saying or doing
than. be a perfect Parrot.
