                                       GROUP IX

                                       ENGINE

                                       TO REMOVE

SECTION It is not necessary to remove the engine from the car except for the replacement
400 of the cylinder block, or removing the crankshaft, or rear camshaft bearing.
In performing other work, there is little ultimate advantage to be gained
                                       from removing the engine.

When it is necessary to remove the engine, the directions given below should
                                       be followed:—
                                       – Drain off water from radiator and cylinder block.
                                       – Disconnect leads from battery terminals and remove battery.
                                       – Remove head lamps complete with front wing tie bar.
                                       – Remove bonnet.
                                       – Remove tie rod from radiator to dashboard; both rubber hose connections
                                          from radiator to engine.
                                       – Disconnect carburettor choke shutter control, all pipes which connect
engine to dashboard fittings and all controls attached to the bottom of
                                          the steering box.
                                       – Remove the countersunk headed bolt attaching the front end of each
bonnet deck to the radiator. ( Prior to chassis No. R 3061 ).
                                                                                      3
                                       – Remove the radiator after undoing the two / 8 ” nuts underneath front
cross member. On cars bearing chassis number prior to R 1408, remove
radiator water drain tap to prevent any possibility of damaging it.
                                       – Remove starting handle shaft bracket.
                                       – Remove undershield and bonnet decks.
                                       – Uncouple accelerator pedal from throttle lever on engine.
                                       – Remove accelerator pedal lever bearing bolt from ‘U bracket’ on top
of engine flywheel housing and the accelerator pedal can be removed
                                          complete.
                                       – Remove ‘U bracket’ from top of engine flywheel housing.
                                       – Disconnect leads from starter switch and remove toe board.
                                       – Remove leads from dynamo and distributor. On cars where a resistance
unit is fitted to the distributor, care must be taken not to twist the unit
                                          when removing lead.
                                       – Pull out ignition coil high tension lead.
                                       – Uncouple exhaust pipe from silencer front end and from exhaust elbow
on engine. On cars bearing chassis number prior to R 3061 the exhaust
pipe is coupled to the silencer by means of a flange and four studs, and the
front end of the pipe is located in the exhaust elbow on the engine by a set
screw. On cars bearing chassis number R 3061 and onwards, the exhaust
pipe is coupled to the silencer by a clip and clamping bolt, and the front
end is bolted to the flanged end of the exhaust elbow. It will facilitate
dismantling if the exhaust pipe is not removed from the manifold elbow

                                                                                                       Page 75.
