                                       – Remove filter from oil pump suction pipe ( if fitted ).
                                       – Disconnect oil pipes from main bearing and crankcase connections and
remove oil pump complete with pipes ( Section 458 ).
                                       – Remove connecting rods and pistons ( Section 436 ).
                                       – Remove main bearing caps and liners.
                                       – Remove crankshaft complete with flywheel and clutch.
                                       – Remove top half of flywheel housing.
                                       – Remove clutch from flywheel ( Section 303 ).
                                       – Remove nuts from six bolts holding flywheel to crankshaft and take off
                                          flywheel.

                                       INSPECTION

SECTION – Inspect each part in accordance with the directions given in the
                         402 appropriate sections.

                                       TO RE-ASSEMBLE AND REPLACE

SECTION To re-assemble engine, reverse operations given for dismantling ( Section 401 ).
403 Care must be taken to tighten all oil pipe connections correctly. The pipes must
be pushed right home in the holes before tightening the unions, otherwise loss
of oil pressure will result, due to leakage from the pipe connections.

The pistons on cars bearing chassis numbers after R 3060 must be fitted so
that the slot in the skirt is against the camshaft side of the engine.
Set engine timing correctly before replacing timing chain ( Section 423 ).

To replace engine in chassis reverse operations given in ( Section 400 ).

                                       CYLINDER HEAD — TO REMOVE

                                       – Drain water from radiator and cylinder block, disconnect water hose
from top of radiator, from water pump body and water pump casing.
SECTION Remove the cylinder head water fitting. Disconnect high tension leads
404 from sparking plugs. Remove fan and belt. On cars bearing chassis
number prior to R 2336, it will be necessary to remove the radiator
before removing the fan, as this is held to the pulley by four studs and
castellated nuts, but on and after the above mentioned car these have
been replaced by set screws, which can be removed with the radiator in
position. When removing the fan belt, guide it over the pulley fitted to
the impeller spindle of the water pump, as the flanges of the lower pulley
                                          are large and easily distorted.
                                       – Remove valve rocker cover and disconnect oil filter to cylinder head pipe.

                                       – Remove the induction and exhaust manifold retaining nuts and washers,
and pull the complete assembly away from the cylinder head sufficiently
for the locating lugs to clear the dowels. The front exhaust pipe will
support the manifold assembly in this position.

                                                                                                       Page 77.
