One of the many challenges facing Linacre in its inaugural year was the Great Coal Shortage during
the especially cold and protracted winter of 1962-63. According to Old Member Ken Laurence, Bam
“personally organized members into work groups to go to the storage yards and manually haul
needed coal back to the College—an adventure that greatly solidified the spirit and collegiality of
the new Linacreans”.
“The weekly Friday night dances turned the
JCR from a lounge into a steam room.”
