WhAT Am i?
I
HAVE RECENTLY READ a short article by the District Grand Master for Malta
with the title — “What is Freemasonry?”. It impressed me a great deal and has Jed
me to wonder “What I Am?”.
This is a very old fundamental question. In fact, over the Porchway of an ancient Greek
Temple of the Eleusian Mysteries, are engraved the words — “What am I? Whence come
I? Wither go I?”. These are still vital secrets today and we know not the spiritual answers.
However, Masonry should help us to approach this awful subject in the right way.
To remind us how to think, we use Symbols as Landmarks in our thoughts. These
remain clearer in our memory than words. Moreover, words can be twisted and given
meanings which were not intended. In fact, it can be said that Symbolism is the Soul of
Freemasonry because it can be understood by all Masons irrespective of Creed, Colour
or Language.
Our Masonic Work cannot be achieved by labouring alone. So we congregate together
in Lodges to build each his own life thus forming a fraternal Chain. Our aim is that one
day these chains should be linked together to form one Universal Brotherhood. When at
last the Craft finishes its labour and lays down its tools, the World will be at Peace!. But
what might this mean to you and me?
“No man could tell me what my Soul might be.
I sought a GOD but he eluded me.
I sought my Brother and I found all three.”
This is the way. There is the Light.
Each one of us is working to build his own Temple of human love, supported by the
Pillars of Wisdom, Strength and Beauty. These Pillars should prevent us from giving way to
soft emotions which will surely weaken our structures. Self-knowledge and Self-control
will lead to Self-enoblement.
There really is no secret of what we can discover about ourselves but it is unfortunately
true that the effort of being honest with ones self arid the effort of obeying the promptings
of ones Soul are not always made by everyone. We should be helping the Great Architect
