Amo Amass A-Muse - Lodge of the Nine Muses 55
The wreath, tied with two ribbons, is of Laurel, which was sacred to the Nine
Muses in Greek Mythology. It may also be noted that ‘Nine’ Concerts are to be given.
As to the members of the Concert party, it is probable that it consisted of the
famous London Symphony Quintette of the period, which had been sufficiently
popular to remain together for over 16 years, and with which, as a child, Mozart
had played when he visited London. All were members of the Lodge of the Nine
Muses and, no doubt, gave their services free. These were : 1) Luigi Borghi, one of the
additional founders of the Lodge who joined before the date of its Warrant; 2) C.F.
Abel, a Grand Steward in 1779, who joined the Lodge the same day as 3) W. Cramer,
on 13th February 1778. The latter was admitted to the first two degrees and raised to
the degree of Master Mason by dispensation in the Hall Committee, not in a Lodge,
free of all expense on 24th April, 1777. Subsequently, Cramer conducted Concerts in
aid of Ruspini’s Girl School (F.M. Mag: Vol.VIII, Feb. 1797) and was the father of J.B.
Cramer the famous pianist; 4) F. Giardini who joined the Lodge on 12th March 1778;
and 5) J.C.F. Bach, a son of the great composer was made in the Lodge on 15th June
1773 and became a Grand Steward in 1781. He was leader of the Orchestra.
