52 Amo Amass A-Muse - Lodge of the Nine Muses

             One of the verses in a song called ‘Advice to the Ladies’ says:-
                   “The thrice mystic number of Three, Three, Three,
                   And the mystical number of Three,
                   The Muses and Graces divine
                   Are the Damsels I mean that are Free.
                   The Cardinal Virtues so right,
                   Who preside o’er each Principal Sign
                   And Cynthia who governs the night
                   In the Lodges resplendently shine.”

             Then there was a most popular Masonic Song which appeared in every song book that I
             have seen. The first verse finished by saying:-

                   “Hail! divine URANIA, Hail!”
             And the fourth and last verse goes

                   “Pour the rosey Wine again,
                   Wake a louder, louder Strain;
                   Rapid ZEPHYRS, as ye fly,
                   Waft our voices to the Sky,
                   Whilst we celebrate the NINE,
                   And the Wonders of the Trine;
                   Whilst the ANGELS sing above,
                   As we below of PEACE and LOVE.”

             I could find no indication to what tune it was sung. Some songs were sung to the tune of
             “O the roast beef, & c.” Another to “The Big Belly’d Bottle” and another to “By Jove, I’ll
             be Free.” Wonderful names aren’t they? Then a closing Ode was appropriately sung to the
             tune of “As calms appear when storms are past.”
                Singing was always considered as a part of Craft ritual and even today a great number
             of Lodges sing Opening and Closing Odes, and I hope that the Initiates Song will still be
             sung on appropriate occasions at our Banquets.
