1985 In 1959 the company began its strategy of moving into new
markets, beginning with the Rotor Tool Company, by the
acquisition of market-leading businesses; but confirmed its
primary commitment to manufacturing. Reflecting its diversity,
the company name was changed to Cooper Industries.
New headquarters is established in
Houston, Texas
A move into new headquarters in Houston, Texas in 1967 also
saw the company's first real venture outside industrial engines
and machine tools into hand tools where, it has developed its
position through a series of complementary acquisitions of
premium brand names over 20 years.
Cooper doubles in size and
diversifies into electrical products
Cooper acquired the drilling equipment and machinery operations
of Gardner-Denver in 1979 and, with the acquisition of Crouse-
Hinds and Belden, doubled in size and carved itself a place in the
electrical and electronic products market.
1985 Cooper Industries merges
with McGraw-Edison
The corporation almost doubled its size again when it merged
with McGraw-Edison, manufacturers of lighting fixtures, fuses
and electrical power equipment and a direct descendant of the
original Edison Light Company. In 1988 it acquired the RTE
corporation.
