In fact, H.R.H. did accept this time (1782-90) and he immediately appointed the
Earl of Effingham his Acting (Pro-) Grand Master. This result, from the point of view
of the Lodge of the Nine Muses, must have been most gratifying and, although the
Shirley family withdrew from London Masonry for a time just before the death of
the Earl of Effingham, Washington Shirley, the 8th Earl, returned to propose H.R.H.
the Duke of Sussex as the first Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge.
